Fasilkom-TI USU's ElCue team wins gold at PIMNAS 37 for their sign language detection video call application, promoting inclusive communication for the deaf community.

The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (Fasilkom-TI) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the first gold medal for Universitas Sumatera Utara in the poster competition category at the National Scientific Week (PIMNAS) 37, held at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, on Friday, October 18, 2024.

The team, called ElCue, is led by Tessa Aghita Irwani Br Barus, with members Putri Andriyani, Rani Widya, Angela Siadari, and Helga Pricilla from the 2021 class of Fasilkom-TI USU. The team was mentored by Computer Science lecturer Hayatunnufus, S.Kom, M.Cs.

Their innovative work is titled “Video Call Application with Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO) Detection Based on Computer Vision and Deep Learning to Enhance Inclusive Communication.” The primary goal of Team ElCue is to facilitate communication between sign language users and people who do not understand it, creating a more inclusive environment.

Team ElCue stands out with the development of a prototype video call application equipped with real-time sign language detection features. This application is designed to foster more inclusive communication between the deaf community and the general public. The poster presented by Team ElCue effectively visualized the entire process of developing this innovation, starting from problem identification, objectives, to the results of the application’s development. This success is a result of intensive collaboration between the team and their mentor and reflects the hard work invested over nearly 10 months in designing ElCue.

Team ElCue plans to continue developing this application until it can be functionally used by both deaf and hearing friends in the future. Collaboration with the Movement for the Welfare of the Hearing Impaired in Indonesia (GERKATIN) will continue to ensure that the application genuinely benefits the community. Team ElCue hopes that the presence of this application can help reduce the inequalities faced by deaf individuals in communicating with the general population.

The experience of competing in PIMNAS has been a highly valuable and motivating moment. Team ElCue met students from various academic backgrounds, each bringing interesting and unique ideas. This opened up new insights for the team and encouraged them to be more creative in their work. The competitive atmosphere at PIMNAS pushed Team ElCue to showcase their best efforts, hoping to achieve victory. Team leader Tessa Aghita Irwani expressed her hope that peers would not be afraid to try new things. According to her, by trying, we can learn many things that cannot be gained solely from the classroom.
