Fasilkom-TI USU hosted an inspiring IEEE GenAI workshop featuring expert talks on ethics, AI writing, and academic guidance, ahead of ICCAI 2025 conference.
Medan, September 2025 — The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universitas Sumatera Utara (Fasilkom-TI USU), successfully held the IEEE Educational Activities Committee Workshop on GenAI on Monday, September 15, 2025. The event took place in a hybrid format — onsite at the Fasilkom-TI campus and online via Zoom — as a pre-conference workshop ahead of the IEEE International Conference on Computing and Applied Informatics (ICCAI) 2025.
The workshop featured two insightful sessions delivered by distinguished speakers:
Oscar Karnalim, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., SMIEEE, Chair of the IEEE Indonesia Section Educational Activities Committee and Dean of the Faculty of Smart Technology and Engineering at Maranatha Christian University, presented a session titled “Generative AI in Education: Policy and Ethics.” He discussed both the potential and the risks of GenAI in higher education, emphasizing the need for thoughtful governance and ethical frameworks.
Dr. Amalia, S.T., M.T., Head of the Computer Science Undergraduate Program at Fasilkom-TI USU and member of the IEEE Indonesia Educational Activities Committee 2025, led a hands-on session titled “Essay and Academic Writing with Chain-of-Thought Generative AI.” The session guided participants in utilizing Chain-of-Thought techniques to improve idea generation, outlining, and academic writing aligned with the 2024 national research and publication standards.
The workshop series received positive feedback from participants, who appreciated its relevant topics and practical approach to integrating AI tools in education. The event also featured internal sessions where several faculty members and staff shared administrative information and essential guidelines for academic life at Fasilkom-TI.
Strengthening Collaboration Through ICCAI 2025
This GenAI workshop was part of a series of academic activities leading up to ICCAI 2025, held at USU’s Digital Library and Collaboration Building on September 16, 2025. The conference carried the theme “Emerging Research in Computer Science and Information Technology in Digital Transformation” and was supported by IEEE as its publishing partner.
Through this initiative, Fasilkom-TI USU reaffirms its commitment to advancing research, innovation, and academic collaboration in the field of Artificial Intelligence, both nationally and globally.
