The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (Fasilkom-TI) at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) successfully held its Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) from Tuesday to Thursday, August 13-15, 2024, with the theme “Coding Your Dreams: Weave Your Future.” The three-day event began with a grand opening at the USU Mini Stadium, where the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M. Si, officially inaugurated the PKKMB. Following the opening, students were mobilized to their respective faculties.
The first day featured welcoming speeches from the PKKMB Chair of Fasilkom-TI, the Chair of the Student Government (Pema) of Fasilkom-TI, and an introduction to the faculty leadership by the Dean of Fasilkom-TI, Dr. Maya Silvi Lydia B.Sc., M.Sc. This session was designed to help new students get to know the faculty leaders, fostering a sense of closeness and camaraderie between students and the faculty. Additionally, the session covered the vision and mission of Fasilkom-TI to help students understand the educational goals and direction of their studies.
The first day also included a presentation on National Insight by Computer Science Lecturer Pauzi Ibrahim Nainggolan, S.Kom., M.Sc. The presentation covered three key points: Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), and the principle of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika; prevention and countering of intolerance, radicalism, terrorism, and opposing ideologies; and national defense and mental revolution. This material aimed to build students' strong national awareness, responsibility as citizens, and readiness to contribute positively to the nation.![]()
The second presentation of the day was on Core Values in the Digital Era, delivered by the Head of the Computer Science Program, Dr. Amalia, S.T., M.T. This session addressed cultural values, ethics, etiquette, and responsible use of social media. The goal was for students to develop strong character, understand cultural values and ethics, and apply them in the digital world, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to use digital technology, particularly social media, wisely and responsibly.
The third presentation was by the Head of the Information Technology Program, Dedy Arisandi, S.T., M.Kom., on the topic of the Higher Education System in Indonesia. This session aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the higher education system in Indonesia and specifically at USU, helping students to maximize their academic experiences and understand the Merdeka Belajar policy to achieve their academic and professional goals.
The final presentation of the first day was on Priority Competitions by Information Technology Lecturer Rossy Nurhasanah, S.Kom., M.Kom. The session outlined several key competitions available to Fasilkom-TI students, such as the National Student Technology and Information Communication Exhibition (GEMASTIK) and the National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS).
The second day started with student registration and a group exercise session. It continued with a presentation on Higher Education in the Era of Industrial Revolution by the Secretary of the Information Technology Program, Ivan Jaya, S.Si., M.Kom. This presentation focused on how higher education institutions adapt and contribute to the significant changes brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The second presentation was by the Secretary of the Master’s Program in Informatics, Dr. Jos Timanta Tarigan, S.Kom., M.Sc., on Environmental Awareness and a Healthy Campus. The goal was to encourage students to actively participate in creating a clean, healthy, and corruption-free campus environment while maintaining and developing good mental health and character.
The third presentation of the day was by Information Technology Lecturer Fanindia Purnamasari, S.TI., M.IT., on Intellectual Character and Anti-Violence. This session aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop intellectual character and address violence issues, particularly bullying and sexual violence. The final presentation of the day was on USU-related topics by Computer Science Lecturer Amer Sharif, S.Si., M.Kom. This session focused on USU’s profile, core values, anthem and song, symbols and tagline, and available services and facilities. Students were also introduced to the Fasilkom-TI laboratories and taken on a campus tour to familiarize themselves with the faculty's environment and facilities.
The third day began with student registration and PKKMB attribute checks, followed by a morning exercise session, preparation, and performance of yells. It continued with an introduction to Student Activity Units (UKMs) at USU, student talent showcases, project exhibitions, certificate distribution, and the closing ceremony of PKKMB 2024.
Overall, the PKKMB 2024 at Fasilkom-TI was a resounding success, offering a range of beneficial activities for new students. With the theme “Coding Your Dreams: Weave Your Future,” the event not only provided insights into academics and campus life but also fostered national spirit, environmental awareness, and positive character development. Through various presentations and interactive sessions, new students are expected to embark on their academic journey with solid knowledge and high enthusiasm. Fasilkom-TI remains committed to supporting students in achieving their best potential and creating a campus environment that fosters growth and success.
